And another thing…

…as long as I’m bitching about work.  WTF do we have to keep changing our password?  Afraid someone is going to steal our damn lesson plans?  And why can’t we use the same password for all the damn sites/programs we are required to use????  A password for the computer, one for email, one for the website, one for the professional development planning site, one each for at least six different sites to be used with the students, one for each of at least three CAI programs, on for the substitute site, one for the paycheck site (okay, I do like having that one protected), one for the gradebook, one to log-on to sign up for mandatory workshops, one for the testing-data site, one for the online student testing site, one for the online safety courses…with so many to remember, what do most teachers do?  Write them down and leave them in their desks so they can access them as needed.  And no, I’m not going to password-protect my list of passwords on my password-protected computer.  I don’t have the friggin’ time to do all that.

Stupid stuff.

It’s not just in school systems. I swear, I have several passwords on my job…some of them for things that I rarely ever have to access, that are really retarded to password protect, anyway.

And, the payroll site? Stupid! All it shows is the hours you’ve worked in a particular pay period. It doesn’t show how much you make. Stupid. It’s like…who friggin’ cares enough to hack in and see that I worked 54 hours last week?

    Retarded.

We have an amazing system on campus called “Unified Login” where we have the same incredibly ridiculous password and slightly less ridiculous login id for EVERY system on campus. It’s incredibly helpful to only have to remember one thing (although I actually have two because our college has a separate email system from the rest of the university…

And you totally forgot the password for the substitute account on your classroom computer….

and I totally forgot the close parenthesis. ). Dammit.

You’re not alone; Arthur is in the same boat. He works for a healthcare company, so regulations are tighter. He’s got roughly 20 passwords he has to use and change monthly… he started a letter/numeral system so depending on the month and year, he’d know what each password was. Plus he has software just to remember all the passwords. It’s crazy!

AC: I KNOW!!!! But my husband won’t let me drive if I do that…*pout*

Andy: I’ve given up trying to understand the logic of protecting things that don’t need it.

CTG: I don’t think my district could ever do anything that makes sense (and I did too include the substitute stuff…which, unlike the old system, doesn’t allow you to choose the sub you like unless you call them directly first to verify and THEN go online to request them!!!) (AND I remembered to close))))))

Pam: I know healthcare stuff is very regulated (BR used to be in that field). So I have a ‘default’ word that I use for everything, and just add alphanumeric stuff…but different sites have different renewal times for the pw, so it’s still a convoluted mess!.

I’m glad you ranted about this. Even Hotmail made me change my password the other day.
